Alice Aycock, Project Entitled “I Have Tried to Imagine the Kind of City You and I Could Live in as King and Queen”, 1987

“In works such as Project Entitled ‘I Have Tried to Imagine the Kind of City You and I Could Live in as King and Queen,” Aycock began proposing elaborate stage-like structures that encouraged viewers to project themselves mentally, rather than physically, into a piece, opening up imaginative possibilities. She explained: ‘I knew I would never get to build the whole scheme,’ whereas she could make anything she wished in a drawing. These projects were often accompanied by allusive writing that she considered equally part of the work— in this case, a playlet of the same name. Adding to the multi-dimensional and fragmented nature of this project, two of its structures have been constructed in different locales: The House of the Stoics is located in Japan, while The Hundred Small Rooms is installed in St. Louis’s Laumeier Sculpture Park.”

Alice Aycock, The House of The Stoics, Lake Biwa, Japan, 1984

“In the text accompanying this structure, a component of I Have Tried to Imagine the Kind of City You and I Could Live in as King and Queen, Aycock described a large tower, 32 feet high, surrounded by ten small shafts, each faced with decorative balconies. Ladders led up and down from one shaft to the next, but the central tower was inaccessible.”
[taken from the curators text at Grey Art Gallery, which is exhibiting Aycock’s works and drawings right now—- goooooooooo there]
